About the Artist

"Handcrafted metal has a look and feel that differs from the mass produced objects we have become accustomed to living with.  Its appearance can be cold or warm, hard or soft, it can stand out or blend into its surroundings, it can be utilitarian or purely ornamental.  Sometimes, Christhe simplest tool becomes just as interesting a project as the work it is designed to create.  When I look at an untouched piece of steel, I must have a thousand thoughts about what it could become.  The techniques and processes of working metal excite me as much as the finished piece, so, whatever I am working on, I always feel fortunate to have the opportunity to do what I love."

Chris Alexander discovered architectural ironwork and the craft of blacksmithing while studying to become a landscape architect.  Since it combined his interests in design and metal, he decided to pursue metalwork instead.  Chris attended several classes in blacksmithing and metalsmithing, machining, and apprenticed in a working blacksmith shop.  Chris continued to learn and experiment in his own studio.  Today, Chris's work draws upon traditional styles and methods of ironwork as well as the clean lines of contemporary design.
